On the Saturday after the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Church celebrates the memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
St. John Eudes (1601-1680) was the first to celebrate a Mass and Divine Office of Mary under this title. The devotion was popularized in the Middle Ages. In 1944, Pope Pius XII ordered the observance of the Immaculate Heart of Mary "in order to obtain Mary's intercession for peace among nations, freedom for the Church, the conversion of sinners, the love of purity and the practice of virtue." (Encyclopedia of Catholic Devotions and Practices. Ann Ball, editor. Huntington, Indiana: Our Sunday Visitor Publishing Division, 2003.)
