Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness... (Philippians 2:6-7)
God, Creator of the universe, all things seen and unseen, became human. God, One-Who-Is-Beyond-Space-And-Time, took on the binding of human flesh and became present in space and time. And why? Because of love, love for all of creation. God experienced humanness so that humans might be able to experience divinity.
In our language, many people, especially children, have difficulty grasping that Jesus is God-Become-Human. We speak of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, and while we teach the mystery of the Holy Trinity as three persons in one God, we still tend to distinguish the three persons as three entities.
The readings today remind us that Jesus is God. God took on human flesh so that God could experience the human condition. It was God - Father, Son AND Spirit - that hung on the cross. Through God's death and resurrection, God opened the door for humans to experience the fullness of divinity.
All because of Love.
