To live in covenant with God means that we need to give up our own desires in order to live as God wants us to live. Jesus exemplifies this as he tells his friends that his hour has come. He prays: "I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name."
Through his death, Jesus was able to rise to new life, glorified as the Christ. He is the grain of wheat that dies in order to bear much fruit. When we die to ourselves and put other's needs before our own, God fills us with the grace to glorify God's name and bear the fruit of God's love in our homes and communities.
Faith Question: What is something that you need to let go of or stop doing in order to allow God's love to grow more deeply within you?
Faith Response: Plant some seeds together. In a flower pot or other container, invite each person to push one seed into the soil. As he/she plants the seed, have him/her say one thing that they need to let go of, to let die, in order to grow closer to God. Nurture the seeds and watch the plants grow as you nurture God's love to grow in your lives by putting other's needs before your wants.
Prayer: Seed of Life, help us to let go of our wants and let your love grow more fully within us. Amen.
