Lord's Day Faith Chat - 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 12, 2009

Like he did with his disciples, Jesus sends us out to share the Good News with the world.  Every time the priest or deacon sings or says, at the end of Mass, “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord,” we are sent forth to live and act in Christ’s name.  Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are able to tell others about Jesus by our words, but mostly by our actions.  But we don’t do this alone.  We do Christ’s work in communion with our families and faith communities.  Christ puts people in our lives who encourage us and help us to live our faith.  Our parents, siblings, other relatives and friends share their faith with us so that we, in turn, are able to share our faith with others.  Isn’t it comforting to know that we don’t have to do Christ’s work all by ourselves?

Faith Chat Question:  Who encourages you and helps you to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others in your world?  How is this person an example of Christ to you?

Faith Response:  Create "God loves you" cards with your family.  Give the cards to people with whom you want to share the good news of God's love.

Pray:  Lord Jesus Christ, empower us to share your love with our families, friends, and world.  Amen.

Featured Website: Cozi.com

I was just paging through the July/August 2009 issue of Children's Ministry Magazine (a great magazine, by the way!) and in their "Keeping Current" column read about a cool website called Cozi.com, so I had to check it out!  It is a free website to assist busy families in getting organized on-line.  Of course, there are a lot of computer programs & PDA processes to help families get organized electronically, but this one is FREE!

Cozi.com provides on-line processes for maintaining your family calendar, shopping lists, remember family happenings in a family journal, as well as access to articles on their "Live Simply" blog.

In 2005, a group of Amazon, Microsoft, & Expedia veterans got together to explore options to help busy families maintain balance and harmony in their homes.  (See more about Cozi Group, Inc., at http://www.cozi.com/About-Overview.htm.)  Along with cozi.com, they also provide Cozi Mobile resources for your iPhone, Blackberry & other PDAs.

Check out Cozi.com to help get your family organized and living in better harmony!

Lord's Day Faith Chat - 14th Sunday in OT - July 5, 2009

It is sometimes challenging to live our faith, especially among those with whom we are closest.  We may not say or do anything out of fear of being rejected.  Even if we do speak or live our faith, others won’t listen to us or take us seriously.

As parents, we can help our children to speak about and live their faith by encouraging them and really listening to them, especially when what they say challenges us.  Children are often more bold about speaking the truth.  They speak what’s on their minds rather than trying to please others.  May we not discourage them!  May we be more like them!

Faith Chat Question:  When have you struggled to speak the truth among your friends or co-workers?  What makes this difficult?  What are the consequences?

Faith Response: For your family prayer this week ask Jesus to help your family live your faith at home. Talk about how you can be more supportive of each other. Pour some perfumed oil in a bowl. Form a circle and have family members mark each other's palms with the oil as a sign of sharing Jesus' love with each other.

Pray: Lord Jesus, help us to share your Good News with our families and friends, especially when it is difficult and they don’t listen to us.  Amen.

Lord's Day Faith Chat - 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 28, 2009

The two stories of Jesus’ healing in today’s Gospel from Mark remind us that Jesus will share his healing power with us if we but ask.  Whether we reach out to Jesus silently in the depths of our hearts or fall at Jesus’ feet and ask others to pray for us, Jesus will share with us his healing power.  Sometimes, though, that healing power is simply the ability to cope with the struggles and illnesses we face.

Our families exemplify Jesus’ love and healing for us.  Through their care and comfort us, we experience the intimacy of Jesus’ healing power.

Faith Chat Question:  Why do you think Jesus heals people?  How do you reach out to Jesus when you need help?

Faith Response:  Share your faith in the power of Jesus’ healing by praying for people you know who need God’s strength and healing in their lives.  Name them aloud, and write their names on slips of paper and put them in a basket or prayer jar.  Each day, have a family member hold the prayer jar in his/her hands as the family prays for the people named.

Pray:  Lord Jesus, heal our pains, and give us strength in our struggles.  Amen.

Lord's Day Faith Chat - 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time - June 21, 2009

It is appropriate that, on this first weekend of summer, today’s readings relate to the sea and storms and God’s power over the natural elements.  Going to the beach, playing in lakes, thunderstorms and rain are wonderful summertime experiences.

Every family looks forward to the relaxing “beach” days of life.  But every family also has its share of storms:  Personal disagreements, a parent losing a job, natural disasters, the death of a loved one...Whatever storms a family might face, we need to remind one another that Christ is in our midst and that we simply need to call upon Christ to calm our racing hearts and guide us through the storms of life.

Faith Chat Question:  Jesus is capable of calming storms.  What is one thing in your life that you would like Jesus to make calm?  When and where have you been awed by God’s action?

Faith Response:  Watch the Weather Channel on TV.  Take note of any major storms and their locations.  Do some research as a family and decide on a charity to donate to that provides disaster relief to storm victims, such as Catholic Charities or The Red Cross.

Pray:  Lord Jesus, calm the storms in our lives and fill us with the calm of your peace.  Amen.

Summer Celebrations

Summer Solstice

Celebrate the sun on the longest day of the year.  The summer solstice is June 21st.  Wake up early and watch the sunrise.  Play outside all day long.  Lather on sunscreen and rest in the sunshine.  Then stay outside until the last pink rays fade into night.

Pray St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of Brother Sun.

Ice Cream Sandwiches

You will need:

  • ½ gallon of ice cream, packed in a rectangular carton
  • One egg
  • One chocolate cake mix
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ¼ cup softened margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Heat the oven to 375 degrees.  Beat the egg, shortening, margarine, vanilla, and half the cake mix until smooth.  Stir in the other half of the cake mix.

Divide this dough into 4 equal parts.  Roll each part into a 10” by 6” rectangle on a lightly-floured surface.  Cut each of these rectangles into 8 smaller ones and lift carefully onto an ungreased cookie sheet.  Bake 5-6 minutes, and remove cookie sheet from oven.  Immediately, lightly prick each piece with a fork several times and let cool.

When the cake pieces are completely cooled, take out the ice cream and open from one side.  Slice off a block of the ice cream, and cut into pieces that fit in between two of the cake pieces.  Continue making the rest of the ice cream sandwiches in this way.  Wrap any that aren’t eaten in plastic wrap and freeze.  Makes 16 sandwiches.

Try different flavors of cake mix and ice cream to vary this treat.

Fireworks Flags

You will need:

  • Black construction paper
  • Glue
  • Glitter
  • Dowel or stick

Use glue to “draw” fireworks shapes on the black paper, then sprinkle glitter on the wet glue.  When the glue has dried, attach the construction paper to a dowel or some other type of stick so that the “flag” can be carried and waved.

Patriotic Placemats

You will need:

  • 8½” by 11” red and blue construction paper, one sheet of each color per person
  • 11” by 14” pieces of white paper, one sheet for each person
  • Scissors
  • Glue or clear tape
  • Clear contact paper

Cut the red and blue paper into strips, 1” wide by 11” long.  Fold the white pieces of construction paper in half, width-wise.  Cut a straight line from the fold to within 1” of each outside edge.  Continue doing this down the page, making the slits 1” apart.

Open up the mat, then begin alternately weaving in the red and blue strips from bottom to top along the short side of the white paper.  Take a red (blue) strip, and weave under and then over the white portions toward the top.  Then take a blue (red) strip and weave opposite of the first strip, over then under.  Continue alternating this way.  Keep the colored strips close to each other while you weave.  When you have woven in a few strips, it may be helpful to secure the ends of the woven strips down with a small dab of glue or a piece of tape.

When the placemat is woven, cover with clear contact paper and use for meals on the Fourth of July.

Thank God for Water!

Water is an important part of living.  We need water to live – to drink, to bathe, to refresh us when we’re hot.  We need living water from Jesus to live, too.  Throughout the summer, and always, look for ways to celebrate the gift of water and give thanks to God for this wonderful resource.

  • When washing or bathing your child, make the Sign of the Cross on his/her forehead and remind him/her that he/she was baptized into God’s family with water.
  • While your children play in the sprinkler or do battle with super-soakers, ask them to pause for a moment, hold hands, and briefly thank God for the gift of water and the fun it provides.
  • On car trips, identify lakes, rivers or streams that you pass.  Make an unplanned stop and have the whole family hop out and wiggle their toes in the water for just five minutes.
  • Check the library for a book of science experiments.  Find some using water that are age appropriate for your children.  Spend an afternoon doing hands-on learning.
  • Be conscious of each time you use water, and be grateful.
  • Plan a quiet prayer time next to a fountain, bubbling stream, duck pond or fishbowl.  Look, listen, and give thanks.
  • Discuss with your family ways to conserve and respect water.  If the kids volunteer to cut back on taking baths, accept the suggestion in good fun and help keep the discussion enjoyable.  Focus on the idea of how we take care of a special gift given to us by someone we love.  Children can turn off water while brushing their teeth.  Teens can read labels on products used in the home to determine if any contain chemicals that contribute to water pollution.  Parents might install water-saving showerheads or consider landscaping part (or the entire yard) with native plants and grasses that do not require watering.  With our stewardship, God’s gift of water will continue to sustain life, provide recreation, and lend power for generations to come.

Lord's Day Faith Chat - Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ - June 14, 2009

One of the questions to consider each year on this Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is:  Do I really believe that this is Jesus that I am receiving in the form of bread and wine?  How we approach the Body and Blood of Christ, how we accept this precious gift into our hands and our bodies, and how we take this gift back to our seats and then back home and into the world say a lot about what we believe.

Parents have an important role in providing the example to their children of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ and then sharing that gift with others by their words and actions.

Faith Chat Question:  When you receive Holy Communion and hear the words, “The Body of Christ/Blood of Christ,” what are some thoughts and feelings you have?  What can you do this week to express your belief in the Body and Blood of Christ?

Faith Response:  For one meal this week, make (or buy) a special loaf of bread.  At the meal, pass around the loaf of bread, inviting each person to break off a piece and say something about how he/she can share Christ’s love with others.  When everyone has broken off a piece of bread, eat it together.

Pray:  Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for sharing your precious Body and Blood with us in Holy Communion.  May our receiving you into our bodies, minds, and souls empower us to be expressions of your love.  Amen.

Lord's Day Faith Chat - Most Holy Trinity - June 7, 2009

The relationship between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is a central mystery of our Christian faith.  It is not a mystery to be solved, but rather it is a mystery to be embraced.  We will never fully understand Three Persons in One Being, but we can strive to live the mystery.

The Holy Trinity is an intimate, loving relationship.  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit move together in a love that is empowered by self-giving and mutual mission.

The Christian family exemplifies the Holy Trinity through its relationships of self-giving love and mutual mission.  Family members live and move together in intimate love in the same way as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Faith Chat:  What do you do, specifically, to live the Trinitarian image of self-giving love in your family and community?

Faith Response:  As you leave for work or school or wherever you go this week, bless one another with the words, "God bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," as you make the Sign of the Cross on each other's forehead.

Prayer:  Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, empower us so that we may embrace one another with the passion of your divine love.  Amen.

Pope Calls on Laity to Recognize Pastoral Responsibility

In an address commencing an ecclesial conference for the Diocese of Rome on "Church Membership and Co-responsibility" this week, Pope Benedict XVI called on all laity to become more aware of their role in the Church.  He challenged that we need a "change of mentality" in relation to the laity's participation in the Church, shifting from "considering themselves collaborators of the clergy to recognizing themselves truly as 'co-responsible' for the being and action of the Church, favoring the consolidation of a mature and committed laity."

The Bishop of Rome indicated that "there is still a tendency to...identify the Church with the hierarchy, forgetting the common responsibility, the common mission" of all the baptized.  He asked priests to transmit to the laity a "sense of belonging to the parish community" and the importance of unity.  He encouraged the laity to "draw close to Sacred Scripture, through means such as lectio divina, and carry out missionary activity through living out charity."
